Now that's a fun thing to carve, you end up with sculptures that glow in
the dark.
End of quote.
On a more serious note, 99% of all "green marble" is,
from a geology standpoint, serpentine rather than
marble. This only impacts on sculptors in a couple ways-
one is that it is hard stuff to carve. Another is that,
in the eyes of the United States Customs Service (and
perhaps other countries that apply the same harmonized
import tariff standards) it is in a different, and
higher, import duty category than marble.
Some American companies had a big fight with the customs
service a few years ago- they'd imported tens of
millions of dollars of gee-gaws (columns, ashtrays,
etc.) in "green marble" and were hit with the higher
duties. They lost, and had to pay around a million
dollars in extra customs duty.
Also, be aware that chemical composition (and the dust
you breath) is different in green marble than in white
statuary marble.
