Can anyone identify these Portland stone fossils?
Interesting; it looks very similar to Texas Shell
limestone, a soft limestone readily available from
quarries in Texas. Another stone from the same
quarries, Texas Cream, is very smooth with few fossils,
and geologically is very similar to the French Caen
stone; it's generally softer and more yellowish in tone
than Portland stone. Texas Cream is more common as a
carving stone, whereas the Shell is used more for
decorative architectural work.
I've seen large slabs of Texas Shell used as interior
wall cladding.
