Introduction
Welcome Steve.
Portland stone is an oolitic limestone formed in the
Jurassic period - approx 135 million years ago. The
stone can be carved in any direction - because of the
oolitic structure, and is called a 'freestone' because
of this. Very fine detail can be carved into the stone,
which has very good weathering properties - used
extensively in buildings, architectural carving, masonry
and sculpture.
We would be very interested in learning more about White
River limestone.
