Subject: introducing myself

My name is Rosemary Elliott. I trained as a painter at
the Royal Academy Schools,London,in the mid-sixties, and
I am now working full-time teaching in a school in
Billericay, Essex, UK. I'm hoping to move into part-time
teaching to devote more time to painting and
sculpture.

I attended the Portland Trust stone carving workshop
last summer for the first time. I had never carved in
stone before and it was a truly inspiring course. The
workshop is situated on Portland Island in the heart of
the quarry which overlooks Chesil Beach; the inland
water provided a testing site for professor Barnes
Wallace's bouncing bombs in the 'Dam Busters' WW2!
Towering over this huge, curving expanse of pebbles sea
and sky is by an abundance of Portland stone in Tout
Quarry.

As a result of attending the course I built a stone
carving studio in my back garden and will be returning
for a two-week course in August this year. Portland
stone is unique; The Portland Sculpture and Quarry Trust
is unique and for anyone who is obsessed with learning
about stone carving and Portland stone, it's a must!
