Introducing myself
My name is Peter Tavernise. I live in North Carolina,
and am a beginning stone sculptor, self taught. My only
exposure to techniques so far have come from books, and
I'm hungry to meet other sculptors in my area so I can
see and learn more. I was crushed to learn, recently,
that most of the sculptors that I held in high regard,
such as Fredrick Hart and Rodin, did not carve their own
pieces but delegated that work to others. This struck me
as scandalous--I mean that part is the most fun for
me--but I suppose I may be naive. Nevertheless, now a
goal of mine is to visit the sculptures at the National
Cathedral in Washington, D.C. I wish I could meet and
talk to the master carver, Vincent Palumbo, who executed
Hart's creation sculpture there, Ex Nihilo.
I have never seen Shona sculpture, are there any
photographs of examples of this work available on the
web?
Best,
Peter
