Carver vs Creator
Hi,
It is not so much a debate, and would never be between
just two people, but I see it as an age old question as
to what is a creator and what is a craftsman?.
I came upon this last night in the book store "This
Rambling Affair"

"I have over time arrived at the conclusion that
people are either born to stone or they are not, in much
the same unaccountable way that individuals seem
destined to a fundamental happiness or sadness no matter
what they do or fail to do with their lives. For those
who have never felt its loving embrace, stone remains
hard, cold and rough, metaphorically austere, obdurate
and unfeeling. Hearts made of stone, they do not break.
But happy are those who are born to stone, who have
heard the stone angels singing, for nothing contributes
more to a well grounded life. These are people whose
idea of a grand vacation is to tramp for miles across
moorlands in search of remote standing stones,
megalithic tombs or the half-fallen walls of ancinet
masons.....There's nothing indeterminate or temporary
about stone, nothing wishy- washy or apologetic, but a
unified solidity, a strength of purpose within which
whimsicality can be set free to fly."

Upon first meeting my mentor in stone, at the time
an 87 year old master stone mason, my wife commented on
how gentle he was. She had expected a hardened man
after so many years with stone. She was surprised by
his gentleness.
I'm off to celebrate his 91st birthday with him
tonight........
all the best,
Patrick
