Need help finding "Direct Carving in Stone"

His last name is spelled "Batten"... that should help in
your search. It was originally published in 1957, latest
edition I've seen was 1968. Pretty decent basic intro
book. Another along those lines is Stone & Marble
Carving, Alec Miller, 1948. Both show pictures of tools,
tell a bit about how to hold them, and discuss laying
out and proceeding through typical types of carvings
(bas relief, high relief, figures or portraits in the
round.)

Millers book is a bit more straight forward.. Batten is
more opinionated. In 1968 Alec Tiranti held the
copyright aon Batten's book, so you could check with
them. They're at [URL now obsolete]
