Lettering, low relief carving
Start using your eye and augment it with a pointed
ruler. There are NO shortcuts to becoming a good carver.
You should develop your eye to the point where you can
determine differences of 1/32" or smaller in depth. It
is not as hard as one may think but you will not develop
your eye if you do not use it.
