What is the composition of such a wheel? Does it provide any
advantage over the aluminum oxide types?

A green wheel is silicon carbide. That is what you want for sharpening
carbide tools, the aluminum oxide will not cut the carbide well and will be
consumed quickly.

It is possible to lay it down with proper rigging. Does the symposium
provide suitable materials handling equipment and assistance?
Quoted text begins.you recommend getting useable blocks off from above the
shoulders/beside the head? Boring through from back to front
where neck meets shoulder, then using wedges vertically
beside the head and horizontally above the shoulder seems a
bit dicey, but is what I have seen illustrated in texts.

You have to work with the grain of the marble in splitting large chunks.
That will help determine the approach. One way is to make slices with a
diamond saw, 3" apart, and split off the pieces with a point chisel- but be
very careful if you're working on a vertical block with a diamond saw, the
saw can grab and jump. I once watched someone cut his work smock from
hither to yon when a 9" saw jerked out of a 5 ton block of marble. He
wasn't hurt, but he did open his eyes a tad...
