Is this "Meerschaum", of which expensive smoking pipes
are made? I seem to recollect that it can be found in
Turkey in some amounts.

What do you mean by "sacred"? I mean, I tend to regard
the act of carving itself as an ancient sacred ritual,
so any material would deserve taking the time and
attention.
