UK limestone suppliers?
Steve, you might like this: I have a booklet from about 1907 published by
the Export Department of the Bath and Portland Stone Firms, advertising
Monk's Park Stone from Wiltshire. The booklet was distributed by an Ontario
firm, Capital Cut Stone of Ottawa; the salesman wrote on the brochure that
he had the stone in stock in his yard on Catherine Street, and that it was
"Cheaper than Indiana and just as durable".
So, it is quite possible that some of the buildings in Ontario that you
think are built of Indiana stone are actually of Portland stone. By the
way, does anyone know if Monk's Park is still being quarried?
