Hi Alison,
Two of the most usefull books I found was "Lettercutting in
Stone" by Richard Grasby ISBN 0 904614 31X and "Letters
Slate Cut" by David Kindersley ISBN 0 9501946 6 2
I live on Jersey Channel Island, where our stone masons seem
to regard their skills as trade secret and wont part with
any knowledge for fear that someone will learn enough to set
up in opposition to them and start pinching their own
customers jobs.
So I am teaching myself now, I practise on 1 inch thick
slate from old fireplaces which gives a nice clean cut
without to much effort, and for speed, I make my own plastic
Vinyle letters or graphics ready spaced out on computer
plotter/cutter and stick them to the slate, scribe around
the edges, then peel off the plastic, and start chiseling
away following my nice neat lines
Best Regards Rob..
