Chisel query
Hi Julie,
Metallurgy, chisels and their effects on stone are a complex study. That
said, the practical point is that if it cuts the stone, use it, and the
cheaper the better. For limestone just about anything will do, including a
good pocket knife if necessary. Don't buy expensive tools just because they
come from Italy and are used by 'Masters'. Check out the local hardware
store for cheap, but quality tools. There are tools available now which were
only dreamed about in other ages.
The hardness and cutting angle of the chisel is simply determined by the
material on which it is to be used. In general terms the harder the stone,
the harder the chisel and the more obtuse the cutting angle. Most limestone
can be easily worked with tools designed for steel, bought cheaply from the
local hardware store. Yes, the abrasive qualities are different, but most
cold chisels respond well to gentle sharpening when necessary.
Regards Bill
