Lettering
hi jonathan grieg
There are few courses in lettering, owing to its relative speciality. The
City and Guilds in Camberwell does offer lettering as part of its full-time
3 year course - but I assume that is not what you are after.
There are some books on the subject: David Kindersley's Letters Slate cut,
for instance, and others by him or produced by the studio, which still
continues run by his wife in Cambridge. Also Michael Harvey has produced a
few books on lettering and graphics, including carving in stone and wood.
There is another which you may be able to order from a good library (the
other two are in print I think); but I can't recall the name right now - the
author is Richard Grasby.
In any case, you cannot learn lettering from books, as I'm sure you
appreciate. You could contact the Craft's Council (a good source for books
too) and ask for a list of lettering artists, and write to them asking if
they might take you on for a week or so. Also West Dean college in Sussex
runs a week's intensive course on a faitly regular basis - taught by Tom
Perkins. Get in touch with the college for a prospectus - it is pricey
though.
I occassionally teach and yould be willing to give you some basic tuition
etc (I am in south London). Please view my web site at
