Subject: Granite building stones or not?

In reply to Scott Knudsen and his granite boulders
varying from 1 to 3 feet in diameter it seems like a lot
of work to square them up. Why not use them for building
as they are. Very attractive single drystone walls are
to be seen here in Ireland, also Scotland and elsewhere
built with granite boulders.

Basically the larger stones are placed on the bottom
followed by medium and then smaller stones. Each stone
should be in contact with at least 3 others. The overall
height of these walls averages about 5 feet although
there are higher examples. Retaining walls up to 5 feet
in height can also be built.

Granite boulders often have a good bite or tooth which
prevents them slipping as easy as smoother stones. If
you have smaller examples like cobbles, in different
colours, you can use these for paving in attractive
designs.
