How can I slice granite boulders?
hello Don
I live around Montréal...
Even if I'm not expert at all, I will try to help you a
bit. I visited a big shop lately where granite was cut
by a cable on which were glued some diamond dust. Two
huge wheels, acting as pulleys, served to drive the
cable ans they where about 16 feet apart. A mechanism
(either hydraulic or worm gear ?) could raise parallaly
these pulleys about five feet about the ground, once
used in the opposite way down, it could feed the cable.
Thus, in between wheels and under the cable one could
place a huge block a any type of material. Water was
used as a coolant directly on the crack made all the way
being cut.
I have been in this shop because, exactly like you, i
needed a boulder being sliced. The boss refused because
he had too much slicing ahead to do. I am planing to
visit some other factories to find someone who will
agree.
So as far as I am concern, if you ever need infos about
the company who build these "band saw" i could find it
for you...
Good luck
