Search for a specific sculpture
Hi Peter,
From your description, this is not the sculpture you are
searching for, but it is similar:
The stone vaults of Norwich Cathedral are decorated with
carved stone bosses (the keystones holding the vault's
ribs in place), and one of them is of a thief being
caught red-handed trying to steal a woman's washing.
They are tussling over a piece of washing, but I think
she is winning. She has stepped firmly on to the
washing whilst also grabbing the man by the hair with
her left hand. Her right arm is raised as though she is
about to strike him with something. One can't see what
she is holding as her forearm is not visible behind her
lifted elbow, but it might well have been a rolling-pin
or a distaff.
There is a book full of nice coloured photographs of the
bosses called "Stories in Stone - The Medieval Roof
Carvings of Norwich Cathedral" by Martial Rose and Julia
Hedgecoe, published by Herbert Press and costing £15.99.
