Surface sealers soft stone
You could try using a microporous sealant (used in the building trade in
the UK for waterproofing brickwork) which will protect the alabaster from
the elements whilst not radically altering the colour or hiding the texture
of the stone.
I've used this on limestone and it works well. There is nothing I know of
which will protect / harden your stone without altering its character
Good luck
