I have just started a Stone Masonry course at Lambeth
College, which is situated near Stockwell in South
London. The course is part time (1 or two days per week)
and is intended to provide vocational training for
school leavers (mature students are welcome).
Course content centres around cutting stone with a
variety of tools and equipment, starting from hand held
tools and working up to large diamond tipped stone
cutting machines.
Although the amount of sculpture is limited, the course
is giving me a great start in how to cut stone
accurately - a useful preparation for carving later on.
Check out the course at Lambeth College's website at
http://www.lambethcollege.ac.uk/ if you want information
- they are very easy going about when you can start as
well.
For the money, it is probably one of the most effective
ways of learning to work with stone at the beginner's
level.
