questions on tools and equipment
Sky,
Moving and lifting stone can be fun , and entertaining! Most
stones under 500 lbs can be moved with a regular homeowners
handtruck. I like to use a pair of oak planks, 2 inches thick,
to move large pieces out of my van. they are invaluable. I cut
up broom handles to make rollers that go on the planks. With a
pry bar, rollers, planks, and a handtruck you can move almost
anything. You just have to think like an egyptian! Watch your
fingers!
A forklift is nice though. Getting a stone down from a high spot
is easy, just use gravity. Going up is the trick. If you are in
a shop that has I-beams going across the ceiling, you can get a
trolly that is made to roll across the beams. They have a bar
that you can hang a chainfall or block and tackel from. I've
found that the wrachet type comalongs have a very limited use.
Whenever lifting stones you must be aware of the weight. Most
marbles and granites are about 170 lbs a cubic foot. Nylon
straps, steel cables, chains, and ropes can all be used. Watch
out for cutting and damaging ropes of sharp edges.
When all else fails, get lots of friends, and some cold beer.
Good luck and be careful.
