Are acrylic craft paints standard practice or is there something else I
should know about?

The industry standard product in the US is Lithochrome from Lithofin Corp.;
I think they're based in Cleveland. You can get it through many of the
monument supply companies. I've also used MAP, Matthews Acrylic
Polyurethane, from Matthews Paint in Kenosha, WI. http://www.signpaint.com/
That is made specifically for the exterior sign painting industry. Both bond
to the stone very well and don't fade. (well, after 25 or 30 years there
sometimes is a bit of peeling and fading, but not much).
