Inca masonry work
i can speak for sandstone.
it is very soft when first quarried and can be
worked quite easily when it has seasoned it
definitely becomes harder.
i think to some degree you can reverse this
process by submersing the stone in water.
there are also different degrees of
softness/hardness in cured sandstone.
