Obsidian

I have never tried to carve obsidian but don't think that you would have
much success. Obsidian possesses the characteristic which geologists term
conchoidal fracture ie it 'shells', like manufactured glass and it would
behave like flint, very brittle and leaving an irregular shape and surface
when tooled. Even the best Neolithic hand axes, arrow heads etc are like
this. I don't know whether you can grind and polish it. Like most natural
materials, it contains natural flaws, air bubbles etc and this may affect
its finished appearance, if this is possible.

I just returned from a wonderful trip to Mexico. I picked up a couple of
pieces of obsidion. It is a black volcanic "glass" from lava. Has anyone
worked with obsidion, and have some ideas of how to carve it etc.
