The treadle powered grinding wheel, such as is used to sharpen axes in
cartoons, is of considerable antiquity, as is shown in such art works as
those old images portraying metalwork from mine to swordsmith. Sharpening
stones in this shape: () have been found in even earlier burials, and there
is evidence of deposits of material suitable for hones being worked quite
early.
