Combining different stones
Has anyone on the listserv come across the method(s) used by
sculptors like Charles Cordier (1827-1905) to combine different
kinds and colors of stone, especially in portrait or figure work.
These dramatic sculptures are simply stunning.
I am especially interested in the planning that goes into the join.
For instance, how the neck of a head fits into the the drapery around the
shoulders.
I imagine one would make a full-sized model and then cut it apart
along the surfaces where the different stones were planned to join.
And then point up these individual pieces. However, I have not found
a method that describes this. Also, I have seen some works that
seem to have pieces that might slip in place. An example is Othello by
Pietro Calvi (1879). In this one a bronze face is inserted into an
opening in a white marble cowl and shoulder drapery.
Any information or suggestions for further investigation would be
greatly appreciated.
