Stone in Kansas?
Quoted text begins. Hello group :-)
I am wondering if anyone knows of any good carving stones native to the =
Kansas area.
Currently I work in fine marbles and some granite. I live in mid Vermont =
so I usually carve in Danby or Rutland Marbles and imported granites. =
Anyway I'm curious about what may be native to Kansas.
End of quote.
Cottonwood and Silverdale. Both are limestones with a tan color tone.
Silverdale is quite soft and often has voids or inclusions. Cottonwood has
two varieties- top and bottom ledge. Top ledge has lots of tiny pits or
voids, bottom ledge is smooth. Cottonwood is a bit harder than Indiana
limestone, and will take a nice honed finish- it also looks good textured
or rockfaced. It's a bit brittle, so you can't do much undercutting.
I generally deal with Lardner Cut Stone, Topeka, KS. 785-234-8634
They're well equipped, good people to work with.
