what type of stone?
The fact that you are able to cut , sand and polish this black stone at all
indicates to me that you have some type of marble or limestone . If you are
working the stone with regular steel chisel and they are not mashed to
immeatiate uslessness in the first 5 minutes means that you are not working
with granite or basalt. If you can file it with a bastard file then you have
some kind of " soft stone". The black marble I've worked with is harder and
more brittle then most lighter marble. It is a challenging material. Sharp
chisels are the key to carving the harder marbles.
The results that you are getting in your first try at stone carving also
tells me that you are doing great!!
Since you don't know for sure what kind of stone it is, make sure you always
wear a GOOD dust mask!
