Subject:
what type of stone?
Dear stone experts, I have been carving stone for about a year (I have been a
potter /metal sculptor.for about ten years). I have my first stone exhibit
coming up and I have a stone thet was given to me, under the immpression that
it is a Vermont Black Marble. The sculptor who gave me the stone is very
knowledgable, although she is getting a little older and cannot see well,
memory going, etc.. I have managed to carve a fairly decent female bust. the
stone does not chisel well at all(chips or flakes off), but it does cut, sand,
and polishes ok. After a high polish it still has little white spots almost
like if you bump into apiece of alabaster and leave a ''bruise''. I think it
is some form of Granite, Basalt has been suggested. Any help would be greatly
appreceiated. I have been lurking here for the last year and have found a
great deal of highly useful information on stone carving. Thank you in
advance, David Hammel. "If you want to
make a statement forever, say it in stone."
