alabaster/soapstone
Hi Deepak:
You will love the difference between marble and alabaster, if soft
carving is your goal! Soapstones are generally softer, although because
serpentine is in the soapstone family, so to speak, there are
exceptions.
I know I have previously responded to other inquiries about stone
suppliers on this list, so if you can, you might want to check previous
responses about everyone's suggestions for stone suppliers. I don't
know if California is too far for you, but I have another suggestion in
California, and one in Canada.
I buy my alabasters and a lot of soapstone from Paul Lindhardt, owner of
Art City Studios in Ventura, California. His prices are very
reasonable. He has alabasters from Utah, New Mexico, Mexico and
Southern California (the Anza Borrego Dessert). He also has Italian
alabasters as well. His soapstones are usually from California, Texas
(some great pink and purple soapstone) as well as Canada and the east
coast of the United States. Paul can be reached on the web by searching
Art City Studios. Otherwise, his phone is (805) 648-1690. Russell
takes the orders and can tell you what they have in supply.
My other supplier, for a different variety of colors (both marble and
soapstones) is Randy Zieber of Neolithic Stone in Vancouver, Canada.
Randy has a wonderful website you can find by searching NeolithicStone.
His prices are unbeatable and the variety of colors is staggering. He
even has blue marble!!
Best of luck and I hope that this helps in your searching. Let us know
what you think of the new kinds of stone that take a chisel to!
