Question on drilling alabaster
Dear Patricia,
Alabaster, like soapstone is very soft. You may effectively use a regular
wood cutting drill bit for this light work. It will cut smoothly and
efficiently, even in soft marbles. It will, of course, dull the bits quite
fast, so get yourself a bit sharpener if you plan to do this often. Using
water to cool the bit and reduce friction may help to extend the life of
your bits as well as preserve the integrity of your stone.
I do not regularly work with soft stones and so am not really sure if there
is a better or more preferred method. But that is what I would recommend.
Good luck.
All the Best,
Steven Humphrey
