Cracks in soapstone
Dear Faisal,
You might try a hole boring drill bit that is used for wood work to make a
candel hole. You might be able to bore it out by hand so as not to do more
damage to the cracked area. If you have money to buy drilling epuipment then
you will have no problems. If money is a problem (it usually is!) then you
will have to improvise. Any kind of steel that is sharp will cut soapstone.
Dealing with a fractured stone is a real problem. Sometimes you can fill
the crack with epoxy after your done . If the piece falls apart while your
carving it then you must decide weather you must remove all the damaged
stone and start over, or try to repair the breat with epoxy. Most stone
epoxy is very strong , much stronger than soapstone.
Good luck .
George Graham
