Re web marketing
I would agree with Arnold and Andrei about the positive and negative aspects
of the web.
Like Arnold I have a site
http://www.incisiveart.com
where I showcase work - it is a virtual gallery. In the nine months that it
has been active I have had lots of enquiries and a few commissions - also
plenty of people seeking work! However, one advantage is that I can direct
potential clients who telephone or mail me to the site so that they can get
a taste of my style and work. Then I can send out specific slides etc
according to the individuals requirements.
The site can also be updated very quickly - within minutes (I use
Dreamweaver 3 and Fireworks 3 - optimising images so they download quickly
and easily. The investment in Dreamweaver pays off) which means that new
work can get an audience, without having to seek out printers etc, and
ending up with thousands of postcards for ages, which can go out of date as
one's work moves off in new directions.
But like any medium it is only a tool - and it is necessary to use the web
site in parallel to other forms of communication etc. The artist still has
to get out into the physical world and communicate person-to-person.
Best wishes
