introducing myself
Having observed this wonderfully rich site for a couple
of months, I would like to introduce myself. (If my cat
will get off the keyboard for long enough for me to type
it!!)
My name is Denise Marshall, and I started carving large
scale in wood (i.e. tree trunks) about eight years ago,
and found it silenced the chattering mind, as well as
being satisfying in a very peaceful, non-urgent way.
About a year ago I tried carving in stone, and was
amazed that though it was so similar to woodcarving, it
actually felt entirely different. The material is much
less predictable than wood, but seems to encourage me to
stroke a form out of the material, in a more intuitive
way. And it is so damned exasperating when a delicious
little form drops off !!
I rarely work with power tools, and never with
maquettes, but try to start with a basic idea and let it
evolve as I go. This is however very time consuming, but
then again that doesn't matter really does it?
I have only worked with Ancaster hard white limestone up
to now.
