Polyphant (WAS Introducing myself)

I carve mainly Alabaster and Polyphant.

Dear Graham, I was interested in your use of polyphant
stone. Like you I am also a teacher [of art & design]and
derive a lot of fulfilment from stone carving. Mostly I
have used local rock [Bath stone, Portland stone,
Purbeck], although I have tried Serpentine and some
others. A few years ago I visited the Polyphant 'quarry'
near Bodmin moor. I say 'q..' because the stone is
selected and pulled out of the overgrown cliff face. The
owner, a retired chap who nevertheless worked part time
in a local scrap yard was quite happy for me to collect
some stone.
As I remember it was a cold blustery and snowy day and I
had to trudge about 3km. along a muddy steep track in
search of the quarry. It was a little disappointing to
get their but I did collect two peices about 70kg each.
It's a bit embarassing to admit that as yet I haven't
used the stone [and I do know that it doesn't store well
outside!]. Have you any advice on cutting and working
it/ and can you tell me where you purchased yours and
its cost. Looking forward to hearing from you.
Regards Richard
