alabaster vases
I've seen several museum catalogues featuring alabaster vases from Egypt.
Somewhere I noted that they are from Luxor and handmade as they have been
made since ancient times. Later in someone's travel notes I saw a reference
to factories in Egypt where alabaster vases are made. The person was writing
about being ripped off, the item purchased being not alabaster but soap. At
any rate, does anyone know how the alabaster vases are carved there? I'm not
quite ready to try lathe work and freehand is a little shoddy (the way I do
it, anyway) so just wondered if there is some other simple, homespun process
out there I'm missing. Thanks for any info. John E
