Kevin,
I am a relative beginner with stone, but in my limited experience, it is
actually easier to carve a form than to draw it. Like Ron said in his
post, drawing requires "tricks" which carving does not. Not that I
haven't made lots of mistakes, but the very fact that I am working on a
three dimensional object automatically improves my ability to visalize
the finished piece. Good luck in your journey of self discovery.
