Subject: Sculpture Symposia

I have been reading with interest the pros and cons of drawing skills and
the solutions for building a better work bench along with a variety of other
stone related topics. To me these commentaries have pointed to the value of
this forum for those struggling and manuvering through the technical and
conceptual aspects of stone carving.

The activity of the discussions herein is evidence of a community wanting to
share knowledge and experence. The actual activity of stone carving is
obviously a hands on process. In an ideal situation the "meat and potatoes"
of this process is best relayed by direct example.

Through these discussions several people have recommended finding an
experienced instructor. Some have also advised participating in stone
sculpture symposiums in Washington State or Marble Colorado.

I would humbly like to toss another symposium into this ring of
recommendations. That would be the "Limestone Sculpture Symposium" in
Bloomington, Indiana. http://www.artlives.org/

Through my participation in this symposium I have seen first hand how this
diverse community of people works together and shares their knowledge of
stone carving. At the heart of it, I think most participants desire to share
their individual knowledge as much as much as they desire to learn. If you
get a chance, check it out.

Concerning the recent drawing discussion; For what it's worth, I think
everyone can draw. Unfortunately, most have been taught that they cannot.
Unlearning is some times more difficult than its opposite.
