Sculptural Bases
Can anyone give me some hints on where to get bases for sculpture? All I
want is a simple and relatively small black base to go with a white marble
sculpture. There seems to be two ways of going about getting a suitable
base.
One is to buy it. I checked out a couple of stone sculpture websites which
sell bases and were shocked/stunned/appalled at the prices. (I'm half way
considering giving up the sculpture part and start making bases -- I'd make
a lot more money!) As I'm not rolling in money, this option is pretty much
out, unless someone can point me to a place with reasonably priced bases.
(Sorry, a 4" diameter base for $80 is NOT reasonable, especially on a piece
that I would sell for $100-150.)
The second option is to fabricate a base, somehow. I have all the 'toys' to
make any wood base I want but I'm concerned with (a)how wood and marble will
look together, unless I paint/French wax it, and (b)how to weight the wood
so that the sculpture is not top heavy. Are there materials other than wood
that can be used for a homemade base?
