sharpening carbide bushing chisels
Dear Bill,
I have learned that once you dull a carbide bush chisel, you will never get
it as sharp as when it was new. However, you can sharpen them with the right
sharpening wheel.
Granite City Tool co. (1-800-451-4570) sells a thin grinding wheel that has
a very sharp tapered edge. It works great, but just one problem. After you
use it , once, it must be resharpened! I use an old diamond saw tooth held
with a vise-grip to reshape the wheel.
I have found that the dull wornout bumpers have their place in the tool box.
Somethimes the dullness on the teeth makes the tool less agressive and leave
a smoother and gentler finish.
Unfortunatly, spending time at the bench-grinder is the price you pay for
working with granite and carbide. So call GCT and ask for Tom. They will
take good care of you.
Good Luck.
