Subject:
name that stone
Hello stone workers,
I recently obtained a couple of small (8" in one dim.), ovular, weathered stones
that appear to be white marble from far away.
I found these stones as part of a landscaping border surrounding a parking lot.
It would seem that these stones are inexpensive and probably sold by the truck
load to landscapers.
When I got them home I experimented on the larger of the two with the pointed
end of an old bushing hammer. What I found upon closer inspection was that this
stone was more like a kind of quartz /crystal than marble. I also found that it
killed the point of my hammer quickly, however the temper of the steel is
probably not very adequate. The inside of the stone (beneath the outer layer)
was very crystalline and beautiful and the stone seemed to kind of shatter
almost like automotive safety glass.
I was hoping that somebody could possibly identify what kind of stone this is or
at least provide info. about how to identify this rock.
Thanks,
