bending over backwards to work for free
I apologize for having lost the original post, but I believe it was
Walter Arnold who asked if anyone would dare ask a doctor or other
professional to work for nothing. I have to answer yes, they would and
they do. In every day job I have had in the last twenty years, from
grooming dogs to managing an optometry office, there has always been
someone who wants something for nothing and they want it fast.
Last week, a patient got mad and walked out becase we refused to file an
illegal insurance claim for him. He wanted us to dump our professional
integrity and risk losing our certification with the insurance company
so he cold save fifty bucks.
A friend of mine is fond of the saying "Don't let the bastards grind you
down." I have no idea where this quote came from, but I think that no
matter what we do in life, we will encounter "bastards" who don't (or
perhaps can't) appreciate what we do. These people should not be the
ones who inflence our decisions. That honor should go to people we
respect.
