Running into a piece of hard stone the first time out of
the gate can be at best "frustrating" sort of like
picking some gnarly piece of wood for your first attempt
at wood carving.
Don't give up on something that interests you so much.
Go to a softer stone. Your area is rife with sandstone
which can be easily worked although detailing can be
limited. Depending on your artistic stone carving goals
I am sure the readers of this site can guide you towards
other types of stone that would satisfy your creative
needs. I find sandstone from the Ohio,Pa,WVa area quite
fun to work with and am experimenting with the many
different types of "things" I can create.
I pass on to you all of the past warnings regarding eye
& lung protection and also add to this list EAR
PROTECTION (excuse my yelling-but some of us are
borderline in the hearing department already) when
operating power equipment.
The important thing is not to give up on something that
can give you much enjoyment and an outlet for your
creativity.
