Judy,

It would be nice to know more about Swann's work. Any references?

Stephen,

You said,

Quoted text begins.where are the slate outcrops in United States - do they come
with Granite as in Blaenau Ffestiniog? Thewre was a tradition
of carving slate fiteplaces in Bethesda and surrounding area
which died out - is there any tradition like that in USA I wonder

This summer I had enough curiosity about slate to search
out a slate quarry in Northern Idaho someone told me
about. I picked up several hundered pounds and am
letting them gestate til the muse visits! I can't
comment on quality because it is new to me. The color is
kinda dusk-colored blue. Regarding western USA slate
carving traditions, I don't think there really is much.
Hopefully, if there is some tradition here someone will
speakup.

best regards,
Bill
