Bill, Thanks for your response and questions about
slate. I have found a few artists who incorporate glass
inclusions into slate sculpture -- Bill Swann from
Porthmadog, North Wales combines the two most
frequently. He blows his own lead crystal. I don't
believe he has a web site, but he's featured in my book
that will come out next year.
I hadn't heard of a working Idaho slate region, so
thanks for the lead. As far as a western tradition, it
seems to me to be mostly in craft uses -- tables and
Japanese flower arrangement holders. But one sculptor
from Missouri has exhibited throughout the mid-west and
reports people are impressed and quite unfamiliar with
the material.
I've got one week to complete the book captions (about
150 images) so I'll stop, but thanks for your response.
