what you are describing is defenately slate I found a great vein of it near
my house on a road cut with pieces ranging up to a couple of feet thick it
is excelent carving materiel! I was recently experimenting with muratic
acid and have found that a short dip in the acid makes slate look like cast
iron! my advice to you is get some!
