beginner in stone (WAS help with terms)
Hi Sheila,
Using fine abrasives is called mechanical polishing.
Using chemicals is called chemical polishing.
Oxalic acid is used on marble and limestone (chemical).
Putty powder is used on granite (mechanical).
Putty powder is Tin Oxide, a very fine abrasive.
'Closing' refers to the grain of the stone - if it is very
dense, then it will take a high polish easily without any
pits or voids. Lead helps to close voids in the surface by
clagging up any little holes.
Emery powder and corundum can be the same thing: aluminium oxide.
Corundum can also occur as a gemstone. Carborundum stones for
rubbing surfaces to shape are made from silicon carbide.
Lead and oxalic acid are hazardous to your health - take care.
Regards,
Simon
