There is no one in Rutland that can carve
stone professionally (with the exception of
Fred Brownstein, Mike Fannin, and Carol
Driscoll). Rutland along with Vermont Marble
died 25 years ago when their monuments were
banned in cemeteries due to acid rain and
decay.

Most of the people who call themselves
carvers in Rutland are in fact hobbyists.
People who are making a living as
professionals have rewards like children,
houses, cars and trucks and do not have to
work another job(s).

There are carvers in Vermont as professionals
but they are not in Rutland. They are in
Barre, VT. There are approximately 20
professional carvers and another 40 etchers
in Barre. If you want to learn about dust
collection (both inexpensive and otherwise),
pneumatics (the only company that makes
pneumatic tools is in Barre, VT) then it is
done in Barre, VT everyday by people who are
productive and can afford the equipment.

The people in Rutland probably just want your
money by taking a course. If you want to make
aliving carving stone, then Barre, VT is the
place. If you want commiseration while you
are in poverty, then Rutland is the place.
