Subject: picking up the pieces

Hi Linda,

I know it doesn't help much to know that we all have
done this same thing, but we have! It is one of the
lessons that only comes the hard way. I do sympathize.
I've been carving stone for 10 years, and just a month
ago I knocked a pretty nice piece on the floor during
the last minute of buffing it. The way you deal with it
is entirely up to you, and ( in my humble opinion ) you
should certainly go with your gut responses, tho maybe
not the first ones. Do what feels right to you. In my
case, I don't try to reassemble the piece, but treat
each of the broken parts as a new carving or a scrap,
whichever seems most appropriate. And usually I let
them lay for awhile before deciding. It seems to be
easier to treat each one with respect after the initial
shock and anxiety have cooled. You will carve something
beautiful from at least one of the pieces, and you will
have a new level of confidence from dealing with it.
Welcome to the club!

Happy carving.
