Quarries in South Africa
Christiane,
Having studied Geography/Geomorphology at a University in SA I can almost
definately say that I do not think there are any soapstone quarries in South
Africa. Although there might be some in the Northern Province or Mpumalanga
Province's (Northern South Africa). Predominant use of soapstone for
sculpture can be found in Zimbabwe. Alabaster - can't help you there, but
it does not ring any bells. If no-one with a definative answer replies to
your request, I suggest you surf one of the many good Geology Department
websites - look for the Departments at the University of Witwatersrand
(Johannesburg) and Rhodes University http://www.ru.ac.za/ .
Both have well-respected departments (even though their bias is exploration
geology).
Hope this is of some use.
Nicola
