Wood and Stone
Linda, The first sculptor I thought of who has used wood and stone together
is Phillip King. Check out his "Shiva's Rings" or "Within" which both use
slate, steel and wood (elm). He may have more, and they look to me as
though there are a variety of ways he's interlocked them. I browsed through
my books on Barbara Hepworth and find she did many pieces in wood OR in
stone, but I couldn't find the two combined. Maybe a more complete search
would provide an example. And, some of the bases that Isamu Noguchi used
for his stone sculptures were cut from aged building beams; they almost seem
a part of the smaller works -- more than just bases.
Nothing really specific here. But I look forward to reading what others
have to offer you. Appreciation of materials is such a part of sculpting
that I wonder, as you did, if these two media haven't been joined by others.
All the best,
Judy Buswick
